Dr. Wimmer has a background in Microbiology, Human Genetics and Biochemistry, acquiring a PhD in this field. After spending some years in practical labwork, including a position as forensic scientist at the the State Criminal Police Office Wiesbaden, he started working as the deputy Head of Division for Occupational Safety and Health at the Federal Ministry for Labour and Social Affairs, in Germany. A couple of years later, he took over his first international position at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Athens, Greece, as a Counsellor for Labour and Social Affairs. From there, Dr. Wimmer has moved on to work in several positions and ministries in different countries around the world.

Back in Berlin his duty was CSR issues and external relations for the Ministry of Labour and Social affairs including G8, G20 and ASEM. He then headed a special unit working for municipal partnerships with Greece under a Parliamentarian State Secretary. In 2014 he joined the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). In 2016, Dr. Wimmer became the Head of Development North and Director Development under the SCR (Senior Civilian Representative) North at the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Masar e-Sharif, Afghanistan.

In 2017, back at the BMZ he served as the Head of Division for Cooperation with the Private Sector and Sustainable Economic Development. Following that, he took over the special duty of kicking off a new task force for fair and sustainable production in the textile sector. After working another three years as Senior Counsellor at BMZ responsible for sustainable agriculture and cooperation with the private sector. He then moved in 2022 to the region of Central Asia, where he is now the Deputy Head of Mission and Head of Cooperation responsible for economic cooperation and development at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Tashkent. There his duties are, besides deputizing for the ambassador, the local coordination, monitoring and political reporting about German cooperation activities and relevant actual developments in the country.
